I honestly thought I was going to lose my mind last night.

I was working on my website. I created a page for my podcast called Best of the Best. It’s my eight most listened to episodes so far. I wanted to make it easy for someone to listen an episode but didn’t know where to start. You can check it out here.

I got the page completed and uploaded.

And then nothing happened. I went to view the website and the page wasn’t there. When I went to the edit screen, there it was, nested under the main podcast heading.

What was happening?

When I got to my wit’s end, I shut my laptop lid and called it a night. I’m like, I will tackle this tomorrow.

I got up this morning but didn’t go right back to the problem. Instead, I worked out, had breakfast, started my second cup of coffee, AND THEN returned to the issue.

Everything clicked. I found a tutorial right away (thank you, WordPress for being amazing) to troubleshoot, walked through the steps, and BAM! My submenu link appeared right where it was supposed to.

Crisis averted.

Take time away

How often do we keep trying to solve a problem with the same solutions over and over?

It’s like hitting our heads against a brick wall and suddenly expecting the wall to give way.

It’s not, and now we have a bruised head to go along with our bruised ego.

That’s how I felt with my website issue. I kept going back to the same solutions, thinking that maybe I had not hit the save button (I had, several times) or that I put it in the wrong spot so I moved it back and forth to different locations.

The key is to NOT hit the point of exasperation like I did, but that’s easier said than done.

I was lucky in that it was later in the evening, I was tired, and so I decided to quit and go to bed. Falling asleep and coming at it with a fresh perspective was all I needed.

I didn’t try the same solutions as I did last night. Instead, I searched for a tutorial on my website host that might be the answer and it was.

It clicked this morning because I had given myself the gift of time away from it.

Call to action

The next time you’re faced with a problem to solve and it just isn’t clicking, take time away.

  • If you feel like throwing something, that’s your cue to let it go.
  • If you find yourself being impatient with your loved ones and it has nothing to do with them and everything to do with the problem, that’s your cue to let it go.
  • If you try the same solution three times in a row and it’s not working, that’s your cue to let it go.
  • If you feel yourself getting anxious, that’s your cue to let it go.

Go for a walk. Sit outside. Read a book. Journal. Sleep.

Just give yourself a change of scenery and see what happens.

I know it’s easier said than done, but I promise you that it will work.

Be well, friends.
