There’s not an actual job I would do for free. A job is something you should be compensated for.
If I’m doing a job for free, then it means I’m volunteering.
One of my favorite volunteer opportunities was at a small town library. I helped out on Saturday mornings once or twice a month, and it was lovely.
As one can imagine, a library in a town of 1,200 residents was never very busy, but I’m grateful it existed. It showed a commitment to literacy.
I helped people find books, I gave directions to people who stopped in, and I answered questions over the phone.
It kind of felt like taking a step back in time, because a lot of patrons were older and didn’t like to use technology.
The personal contact was refreshing.
When we moved from that small town, I knew it would be something I would miss. Seven years later that still holds true.
