A lesson from a five-year-old

“Mimi, can I go outside and smell the rain?” — Ace, 5-years-old.

Recently, I was hanging out with my grandkids. The younger two were taking naps, and it was just Ace and me.

Ace wanted to go outside to play. There is no sod in their yard yet. Moreover, rain was starting to come down. It wasn’t happening.

With that one little question, he still found a way to go outside and enjoy the rain from the porch.

When his little brother Enzo (who’s three) woke up from his nap, Ace invited him to go out to the porch to smell the rain too.

Enzo dutifully went where his big brother wanted him to go. I’m fairly certain he wasn’t fazed. He wasn’t impressed either.

I was though.

Ace did what a lot of us adults fail to do. He enjoyed a simple pleasure.

When it rains, do you step outside to smell it? Or do you start ruminating on how the rain might ruin your outside plans for the day?

It’s doing a lot of good. It’s nourishing the soil, cleaning the sidewalks, and providing free smells to a five-year-old boy.

And I’d say that simple pleasure is pretty darn great.

Until next time.

Cheers.
